What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a widely-used and highly-effective medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins all over the body. The procedure involves an injection of a solution (sclerosant) directly into the vein. The solution causes the blood vessel to clot and stick together, which eventually prompts the clotted vessel to turn into scar tissue and fade away naturally.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally-evasive, affordable procedure. Depending on the size of the veins and the number injected, the procedure typically lasts anywhere from five to 30 minutes. The injection of sclerosant directly into the affected vein or veins forces blood to reroute to healthier veins. Most patients experience mild discomfort during injections and are advised to wear compression bandages or compression stockings for the first few days or weeks after treatment to prevent blood from returning to the treated veins. In some cases, veins may reappear in some slight capacity months after treatment. If this is the case, another treatment session may be needed.

What Are The Benefits of Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a short and relatively painless procedure. It is through this process that sclerotherapy is used as a fast and effective spider vein treatment and removal. For patients with varicose and spider veins, sclerotherapy can offer a wide range of benefits, as well as immediate pain relief. Additionally, benefits of sclerotherapy include, but are not limited to, the following:
- High success rate
- Short treatment time
- Increased wardrobe options
- Improved leg appearance
- Short recovery time
- Minimal side effects
- Rapidly visible results
Who Should Undergo Sclerotherapy Treatment?
This injectable treatment is best used for patients with varicose or spider veins. Before undergoing this treatment, a patient should first meet with a vascular specialist. Your vascular specialist will determine if you qualify for this vein treatment option. Those with active deep vein thrombosis or superficial vein thrombosis (blood clot) are not eligible for sclerotherapy treatment. Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or unable to get out of bed should also not undergo sclerotherapy treatment.

Sclerotherapy FAQs
The cost of your sclerotherapy procedure at the Arizona Vein and Laser Institute will largely depend on how many veins you need to treat. In some cases, especially if medical symptoms accompany your vein issues, insurance may cover some or all of the expense. A typical session will range from $400-$800, but we’ll outline pricing during a consultation so that you know what to expect for your circumstances.
We’ll ensure your sclerotherapy preparation isn’t a guessing game. Your doctor will provide special instructions before your visit. They’re simple and will likely include:
- Avoid shaving or using lotion on your legs on the day of your appointment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Tell us about any medications you take, especially blood thinners.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a special solution called sclerosant directly into the affected veins. Commonly used chemicals include sodium tetradecyl sulfate and polidocanol, both of which are safe and effective. These chemicals irritate the vein walls, causing them to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body.
The number of sclerotherapy treatments you’ll need depends on several factors, such as the size and number of veins being treated. Most people require two to four sessions to achieve optimal results. We’ll space these treatments a few weeks apart to allow your body to heal between sessions.
Sclerotherapy is relatively painless. Most of our patients report feeling a mild stinging or burning sensation during the injection, but it’s brief and tolerable. Afterward, you may experience minor soreness, but it should fade quickly.
After sclerotherapy, you can resume most of your normal activities immediately. You may see redness or small lumps where we injected the medicine, but this and other minor side effects are mild and should fade within days.
If you notice lumps at the treated site, don’t worry. It’s common for these to appear after your procedure. Most lumps and redness go away within a few days, but some can take several weeks to fully disappear. Stay in touch with us to make sure everything is healing properly. We’ll schedule follow-up appointments if necessary to ease any of your concerns.
Yes. Walking after sclerotherapy is important. It helps your blood flow and lowers your chance of blood clots. We usually recommend walking right after your appointment and taking short walks several times a day for at least a week following your procedure. Sclerotherapy is a simple and effective way to treat unwanted veins and improve the appearance of your legs. Make every effort to enhance your results by walking and following our aftercare instructions.
